Funeral services for a former Saint John craftsman, William Sonier of Penobsquis, were held from the Dupuis Funeral Home, Memramcook West. Mr. Sonier died (17 janvier) in the Kings County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was a well-known craftsman of wrought iron and upon leaving Saint John in 1968, he operated the Old Lantern Gift Shop at Penobsquis.

Born in Memramcook East, in 1896, he was the son of the late Amos and Mary (Landry) Sonier. He was the last surviving member of his family. His first wife, the former Alice Burke, predeceased him in 1939, also a son Léo.

An avid sportsman, he was an honorary member of the New Brunswick Rifle Association, the New Brunswick Handicraft Guild, the Royal Canadian Legion, Sussex Branch and from 1937 to 1940, the Saint John Fusiliers Club. A master craftsman in ornamental iron, he received much acclaim for design and workmanship throughout Canada. Mr. Sonier was a veteran of the First World War and served overseas with the Canadian Army. During the Second World War, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Quebec.

He is survived by his second wife, the former Grace Marguerite Moore of Sydney, N.S.; five sons, Andrew, Halifax, Fred, Toronto, Lewis and Frank, Saint John, and William Jr., Riverview; one daughter, Mrs. Stanley Flemming (Anne) of Halifax; two step-daughters, Mrs. Gerald Ryan (Sonya), Saint John and Mrs. John Maxwell (Lois) of Fredericton; 30 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The body rested at Dupuis Funeral home, Memramook, from where the funeral was held to the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. J. G. Pellerin. Pallbearers were: Frank Sonier Jr., Norman Flemming, David Flemming, Gerald Ryan, John Maxwell and William White. Entombment was in the vault of St Joseph until spring when interment will be made in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Memramcook.
